Generally, a woman who is sexually aroused experiences the excretion of vaginal lubricants which makes sexual intercourse more pleasurable. This is because, when the organs rub against each other, the lubricant ensures less friction and allows for greater movement. However, some women have a hard time getting wet. In such cases, artificial lubricants can be used to simulate wetness and ensure a satisfactory experience.
Another instance where lubrication is needed is anal intercourse – a pleasurable activity that is enjoyed by those of any sexual orientation due the sensitivity and the nerve endings of the anus. However, anal intercourse can be more dangerous than vaginal intercourse because the lack of natural lubricants means that there is more chance of the soft tissues being damaged. Therefore, lubrication is an important accessory for those performing anal sex. Many men also choose to use lubricants during masturbation to enhance their orgasm. One of the main reasons that condoms break is because of excessive dryness. Therefore, there is an added benefit to ensuring that lubrication is used.
There are various types of artificial lubricants on the market including jellies and creams. The three main types are water based lubricants, oil based lubricants and silicone based lubricants. However, oil based lubes are often not compatible with condoms, are hard to clean up and pose health risks. Water based lubricants are certainly the more favourable of the three, as they are easy to clean up, do not cause irritation and are perfectly compatible with condoms. The only disadvantage is that they have to be reapplied periodically due to the fact that they are water soluble and easily get absorbed by the skin. Silicone based lubricants are more like water based ones except that they last longer. All in all, using a lubricant greatly enhances the sexual experience.
